Hello and welcome to today’s episode of Location, Location, Location – The Picnic Special. Today we’re in the charming market town of Peebles, in the beautiful Scottish Borders, and we’re on the hunt for some hot properties (literally… we’re looking for suntraps).
Now, anyone who has been to the Borders will know first-hand that there’s no shortage of green spaces available, but we’re not just after any old patch of grass. We’re on the lookout for only the freshest, brightest and most scenic spots to lay your blanket…
Hay Lodge Park
Hay Lodge Park is the biggest park in Peebles and is right on the banks of the River Tweed, making it a great location for a family picnic. There’s lots of open space, perfect for the little ones to run about in and room enough that there’s no danger of being trapped in the shade of your neighbour’s parasol. And…most importantly, the views are very pleasant. The park is pet friendly and the local ducks will help take care of any leftovers from the picnic basket.
Glentress Peel Café
Up in the rolling hills of the Tweed Valley, sits the Glentress Peel Café. A slightly more remote but equally remarkable picnic location that’s hugely popular amongst mountain bikers and walkers alike. The Café offers a range of facilities that can turn your run of the mill picnic into a luxury affair. From picnic tables to refrigerators full of tasty essentials. This spot is a must for the nature loving, picnic perfectionist.
Rose Garden at Peebles Hydro
Located within the grounds of a Border’s institution, the Rose Garden at Peebles Hydro is the ideal setting for a romantic picnic for two. Rebuilt in the early twentieth century, the Hydro makes the perfect backdrop in which to lay your blanket. Expect sunshine, sweet scents, and a relaxed vibe.
Manor Valley
A short drive or cycle from Peebles lies the expansive Manor Valley. Beautiful Borders countryside at its best. With the Manor Water running through its heart; this area is picnic heaven. Get back to basics with just the contents of your picnic basket and the great outdoors to sustain you.
Neidpath Castle
Now, it’s fair to say that, from the outside at least, this property looks like a bit of a fixer-upper but if you want Scottish history on your doorstep then this is the spot for you. The castle that stands today is thought to have been built in the late 14th century and, although now privately owned, is open to the public for tours, weddings and other functions and activities. Neidpath Castle offers you the chance to see the Borders’ past while tasting the Borders present.
