Things to do in Peebles

The Park Hotel, Peebles has an enviable location in the heart of the Tweed Valley, close to the Scottish Borders. And as well as providing mile after mile of glorious scenery, this location also offers lots of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. From history and architecture to scenery and sports, you’ll find them all on our doorstep. Here are some of our favourite things to do in and around Peebles.

Castles and Historic Places

You’ll find an abundance of wonderful historic sites close to The Park, including Traquair House, Scotland’s oldest inhabited house. Here you can enjoy tours of the house and get lost in the maze. Alternatively, just a 30-minute drive from The Park, you’ll find Abbotsford House – home of the famous Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott, whilst an hour away is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle – Floors Castle.

Gardens in Peebles

Stay in Peebles between February and November, and you won’t want to miss a visit to Dawyck Botanic Gardens. Situated just 8 miles from The Park, these gardens offer an abundant display of exotic and native plants throughout the year. Even closer are the Kailzie Gardens where you’ll find impressive flower displays as well as a children’s corner, putting green and picnic area. Visit between Easter and the end of August to see live viewings of the Tweed Valley Ospreys.

Viewpoints and Scenic Drives

When it comes to amazing views, we’re spoilt for choice in this part of Scotland. Highlights near to The Park include the Millennium Viewpoint at Kelso and the world-famous Scott’s View at Bemersyde. Meanwhile, just over the Border lay the Farne Islands – home to over 23 species of seabirds. Boat trips run to the Farne Islands from April to October from Seahouses Harbour.

Fishing in Peebles

Keen fishermen will be pleased to hear we have a range of excellent fishing destinations close to The Park including Peebles Trout Fishing and Kailzie Fishery. Our team can give you further information about fishing on the River Tweed and we can also provide a packed lunch for your day away fishing.

Cycling in the Tweed Valley

From thrilling mountain bike trails to gentle road cycling routes, the Scottish Borders is a great location for cycling. The Peebles to Innerleithen Cycle Path provides a scenic 6-mile route through the Border’s countryside whilst adventurous mountain bikers can head to Glentress Forest. Here you’ll find a range of graded trails as well as a multi-graded free-ride area. There are lots of other cycle routes that start close to The Park and our team will be happy to help you find your perfect route. We can also advise on local bike hire.

 Golf Clubs in Peebles

Of course Scotland is also famous for its golfing heritage and we have a range of renowned golf courses on our doorstep. In fact, Peebles Golf Club is one of the most picturesque courses in Scotland and is located just one mile from The Park. Meanwhile, 15 miles from Peebles, you’ll find the West Linton Golf Club which was recently voted the ‘friendliest golf course in the Scottish Borders’.

Breweries in Peebles

Whilst in Scotland, why not treat yourself to some of the local ales? Perhaps the best way to taste them is with a brewery tour where you can learn about the brewing process before enjoying a sample. The Traquair House Brewery exports its rich dark ales all over the world and is just six miles away from The Park.
